Understanding Gearing

BMX gearing is pretty easy to understand. The Most common gearing found on stock (cheeper brand) bikes is 44T (Chainwheel/Sprocket) and 16T Freewheel. This is most likely what you ran as a kid, or may even now!

People change gearing for all sorts of reasons. The main one in Freestyle bmx is for weight and size! If you got that HUGE sprocket, and you disaster a quarter pipe, your most likely gonna mess that sucka up BAD! But if your running a 25T you will clear it.

Example, someone running gearing of 25T - 9T is the exact same as running 44T - 16T Its just been reduced, but will still be the same.

Racers also take gearing to there advantage, less pedals = more speed = Harder to pedal.

Popular Gearing Ratios:
22,23/8T
25/9T
28/10T
30/11T
33/12T
36/13T
39/14T
41/15T
44/16T

Any questions, additions please post!
Thanks,
Kyle

28/11T is also another good gear ratio.

When I went from 28/11 to 28/9 I hated it. For a day... Then I loved it, and wont change back. Unless i d0 25/8

If you ever find yourself at Pier Park or any Portland Parks, hit me up. I'll let you ride my bike, see if you like the gearing. Plus I can get a shirt to ya too! :)
